When David Warner and company beat Gujarat Titans at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Tuesday, Wriddhiman Saha gave his wicket to Delhi Capitals, which angered Sunil Gavaskar. Saha's IPL 2023 season hasn't gotten off to the greatest of beginnings, as he hasn't been very impressive with the bat this year.
The 38-year-old did demonstrate his value to his team early on in the game when Delhi Capitals were batting and were finding it difficult to control Mohammed Shami, who claimed 4 wickets on the night and was named Player of the Match despite being on the losing team.
Gujarat lost against Delhi by a slim margin of 5 runs despite Shami only giving up 11 runs. Saha was bowled by Khaleel Ahmed in the first over of Gujarat's chase.
Saha was unable to handle Khaleel's swinging deliveries; eventually, he conceded a thick edge to wicketkeeper Phil Salt by thrusting his bat out on a few balls before getting dismissed.
Gavaskar strongly criticized Saha during his on-air commentary on the dismissal after his 'foolish' shot choice.
“My buddy, it's too late. When you play a shot like that, all your expertise is irrelevant. In the dugout, you may drill that shot, Gavaskar said.
He said, “For the shots that were played, the words that you pronounced 'fullish' can be said differently with a double oo in it.”
After Delhi's openers Saha and Shubman Gill both struggled, captain Hardik Pandya came out to bat at number three and smashed a fifty but was unable to lead his team to victory.
Rahul Tewatia and Hardik were on strike in the final over, which the Gujarat Titans needed to win by 12 runs. Tewatia had just hit three straight sixes against Anrich Nortje in the previous over, but Ishant Sharma maintained his composure and got rid of Tewatia with the fourth ball of the innings' final over, giving his team the win with just 6 runs.
