Prayagraj: Chief Justice of India Justice DY Chandrachud said on Friday that distant rural regions should get university law education so that people from tiny places may still pursue legal careers. During Dr. Rajendra Prasad National Law University’s inaugural ceremony, Chandrachud said, “We can now connect with students who live far away thanks to technology.” The current legal education system advantages exclusively English-speaking metropolitan pupils, notwithstanding advancements in the field.

“Children from diverse backgrounds are unable to get admission in these universities due to their lack of proficiency in English, according to a survey on diversity conducted in five law universities,” the speaker said. “Today, we have translated about 36,000 Supreme Court judgements from 1950 to 2024 because of Bhashini software,” said Chandrachud, the program’s principal guest. Its goal is to render these judgements for each and every person practicing law in district courts but lacking proficiency in the English language. According to him, even events like moot courts, internships, and contests were historically created with youngsters from wealthy households in mind.

“Universities and law schools should plan it with children from a variety of backgrounds in mind,” he said. In order to ensure that the top Uttar Pradesh students become the greatest attorneys, the CJI further pleaded with the university administration to maintain Hindi as the language of instruction. He said, “Legislators have made a substantial contribution to nation-building since the Indian Independence Movement, from the drafting of the Constitution to modern Indian politics.

Attorneys are essential to society in many ways; they help the legal system run smoothly and advance justice. They stand up for people and organisations, making sure that their legal rights are upheld. This covers civil litigation, criminal defence, and legal issue advocacy. “The representation of marginalised and vulnerable communities, ensuring that they have a voice in the legal system,” he said, is part of the job of attorneys.

Yogi Adityanath, the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, Justice Manoj Misra of the Supreme Court, Justice Arun Bhansali, the Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court, Advocate General Ajay Kumar Mishra of Uttar Pradesh, and University Vice-Chancellor Usha Tandon also spoke to the group.
